In the rainforest-regions of Ecuador oil is being produced with out-of-date equipment. The sensitive Eco-systems are in severe danger due to the activities of the oil-companies. Especially the streams and rivers are in a bad state because of the discharge of waste into them.

Many water-living Mammal-species like dolphins, otters, and sea-cows are threatened because of the pollution and destruction of their living-spaces. A study (informe YANA CURI, 2000) maintains that the local natives have a significantly higher cancer-risk because of the pollution.

States-side there is a lack of money to enable environmental protection. The indigenous people are often not aware of the ongoing pollution. The German Environmental protection organisation Yaqu Pacha analyses the population numbers, the spread and the degree of danger of the water-living mammals in the nature reservation of Cuyabeno.

Aim of the Sacha Pacha project is to bring the responsible government branches to optimise the oil production methods and to improve the security-checks and to make the population aware of the problems in educational projects.
