The icy land, the Tierra helada, stretches up to altitudes of 5000m. Temperatures average around and below 0 degrees Celsius, thus preventing almost any cultivation. In these elevations paramo grass predominates.

To the Tierra Nevada, the "snowy land", belong the high Andean peaks above 5000m.
